YouTube’s Impact on Search in 2026

If a brand focused on generating low-funnel, application-focused videos for three years, what would the search impact be?

I recently conducted a comprehensive study examining the search impact of a video-first content strategy, evaluating a brand that spent over three years producing YouTube videos for nearly every application of its flagship product. Using a keyword list derived from that playlist, I scraped Google Search Results and AI Overviews across 27 core application topics to analyze where and how YouTube and the brand were cited.

In the data, YouTube was cited by name 2 times in the AI Overview source cards and 2 times in the generated AI Overview text responses. Furthermore, resolving Google’s redirect URLs revealed that 10 total AI Overview source citations linked directly to underlying YouTube video pages.

Bar chart displaying organic result counts for various categories related to publications, standards, competitors, and brand information.

Across all 79 total AI Overview source slots, the core brand captured 24 citations (30.4%) through its YouTube videos, application notes, and webinars. However, contrary to the assumption that competitors captured the remaining slots, competitors accounted for only 6 citations (7.6%). Instead, the vast majority of remaining sources—over 60%—came from peer-reviewed scientific journals, academic databases, and technical standards bodies.

In organic search across the 251 returned results, the brand’s YouTube channel was the single most dominant commercial domain with 18 rankings (7.17%), surpassing the brand’s own website (9 rankings, 3.59%) and all instrument competitors combined (22 rankings, 8.76%). Yet, academic publications led the entire SERP with 94 rankings (37.45%).

In today’s AI-driven search landscape, brands can’t count on video content alone. To earn strong, high-intent visibility, you need to build technical authority not just on YouTube, but also through your website, detailed whitepapers, and participation in trusted industry platforms.

Let’s not take away from the true benefit of these videos: they are lead magnets for users looking for a solution to a complex problem; the AI and search results lift is a byproduct.
